Today is the day. Move away from all the TechBros platforms, go for the next
silo, maybe with a sprinkle of federation and decentralization.
But are you sure this continuous distracting, emotionally distressing, time
waster (anti)social world is what you need to get informed and have rewarding
conversations?
We do not believe that.
We do believe that internet has many protocols and ways to allow communication
happen, but the walled garden time consuming socials are not the place. Simple
as that.
We took part the Indymedia days and it was a completely different environment at
start, then we experienced the problem of moderation without even having the
technologies to do it for us. And so that project failed by consumption of the
participants (too toxic to handle). Not the only reason it failed, but the one
worth mentioning here.
Even before having a news portal as Indymedia we experienced how threads of
discussions online either on newsgroups or mailing lists suffered the fact that
with a computer in between people, chances for a conversation to become a flame
were extremely high.
This deterioration of any digital exchange was even formalized in 1990 as
Godwin’s law (As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a
comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.).
So the problem always existed, only the scale of the problem was way smaller and
contained because of the number of participants. But today the scale is world
size. We see how any conversation even in real life has been affected by the
misleading information and toxic behaviors that the social media imposed to the
public discourse.
So, do yourself and the world a favor, stop using any of these platforms, take
back your time, reduce the speed rate of bulimic emotional information you
process every day. You are not only what you eat, but also what you read. Stop
with junk, give yourself a treat instead. If you are an activist look at this
page to look at places and tools to publish online.
